Frequently Asked Questions

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. After completing medical school and residency, we are trained to understand how the brain, body, and environment interact. We can prescribe medications and provide psychotherapy. Therapists (such as psychologists, counselors, or social workers) focus primarily on high level psychotherapy (EMDR, IFS, CPT, ACT, etc) but do not prescribe medication. Nurse practitioners can also prescribe medications, but psychiatrists receive more extensive training in both medicine and mental health treatment.

  • Psychiatrists complete four years of medical school followed by a four-year psychiatry residency, where they receive in-depth training in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, neuroscience, and general medicine. At Zolara Integrative Psychiatry, our physicians continue to participate in annual continuing medical education (CME) to remain current with the latest research and evidence-based treatment approaches.

  • At Zolara, we integrate psychotherapy into every visit. Even when the focus is on medication management, our physicians use therapeutic techniques to help patients gain insight, develop coping strategies, and improve overall functioning. We believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.

  • Yes. At Zolara Integrative Psychiatry, we believe that mental health care is most effective when it is collaborative and multidisciplinary. We regularly coordinate with primary care physicians, therapists, and other medical specialists to ensure that each patient receives comprehensive, cohesive treatment.

In addition, we are developing partnerships with registered dietitians, psychotherapists, and other trained healers who share our commitment to evidence-based, integrative care. These collaborations allow us to incorporate nutrition, lifestyle, and holistic wellness strategies into each treatment plan.

With your consent, our team communicates directly with your other healthcare providers to maintain continuity, minimize redundancy, and align your care across disciplines.

During this visit, your psychiatrist will review your medical, psychiatric, and social history in detail and discuss your goals for treatment. Follow-up appointments typically last 30 minutes and include both medication management and supportive psychotherapy.
